Emojition
Carrying Symbols, Bearing Weight takes inspiration from Leonardo da Vinci’s mirrored writings—thoughts sealed in symbols, awaiting interpretation. Five centuries later, in the digital age, emojis inherit a similar role of emotional encoding, becoming non-verbal carriers of feeling in the absence of voice and expression. Building on this, OverVision Studio designed the interactive experience Carrying Symbols, Bearing Weight, inviting participants to begin with a flat-toned message and assemble personalized emojis based on their own interpretations.
The system transmits both the original message and the constructed emojis to GPT-4o, which generates possible emotional responses. These are then visualized through water-surface projections and electronic cards, making the translation of emotion perceptible. Blending language design, semiotics, and artificial intelligence, the work investigates how humans sustain depth in non-verbal communication through technological interfaces. It also echoes da Vinci’s use of text and symbols as design media, unfolding a language-design experiment that bridges five centuries.
