Sonic Morphologies
Phonic Morphologies is an interactive artwork that explores the relationship between vocal sound, emotion, and visual translation. Audience voices are processed by a large language model and converted into text, while voice-feature analysis generates emotion classifications that are further transformed into dynamic visual “morphologies”—moving images with both emotional texture and physical qualities. Inspired by the Bouba/Kiki effect, the work examines whether impressions of softness, sharpness, or neutrality in sound can be captured by machines and reinterpreted as visual experience.
Rather than aiming for precise recognition, the piece highlights the biases and ambiguities present in AI’s perceptual processes, making audiences aware of how emotion may be weakened, rewritten, or misplaced in the datafication of language. Within this cycle of “voice–emotion–image” translation, Phonic Morphologies invites viewers to reconsider language as an embodied sensory complexity, and to reflect on the boundaries and possibilities of emotional understanding between humans and machines.
