Brief description of the work Three works from 2024 Master Diploma Projects are showcased:
Syuwa Yoshida (Architecture that doubles as a ventilation tower for subway, the analysis of wind patterns around the site led to intentionally uneven wind patterns for interior zoning of the building);

Mugiho Okano (By employing the “directiveness” inherent in change, this proposal is an “architecture of agency” that prompts residents to think and imagine transformation).

Ryusei Ogawa (Severing experiences through collision, institutionalized perspectives are interrupted, human actions shift from decoding to understanding, thereby proposing architecture that awakens human creativity).

The memories of Isezaki Mall, located in Yokohama, Japan, are embedded in its distinct and varied storefront facades. While it celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2024, the buildings are gradually being demolished and signs of decline are evident. By weaving the memories of the city, this project aims to create a building that connects the past and the future.

This workshop will expand upon our collective work from the first in this series, moving from FURNITURE to ARCHITECTURE. The tectonic aspects of material—its structural elements, limits and connections — are applied to the essential social function of creating structures for habitation. The objective is to engage in a creative process of hands-on making that is both collaborative and useful, challenging and fun, testing our skills of problem-making and problem-solving against the constraints presented by real material at a 1:1 scale. We will immerse ourselves in collaboration, physical fabrication, relationship-building, research, material exploration and experimentation. This hands-on course offers practical, collaborative, project-based opportunities and experiences inside the studio and beyond, which will result in the design and construction of full-scale structures out in the world.

Shingo Saito has consistently pursued the creation of new architectural typologies. In the public space project at Oimachi Station in Tokyo, we challenged the conventional gender-segregated toilet system by proposing sculptural nad functional all-gender toilets, redefining the role of sanitary facilities in urban space. For Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, our design of rest areas featured tower-like clusters of toilets arranged into male, female, and all-gender zones, transforming them into symbolic elements of the landscape. In Nishio City, Aichi Prefecture, the Lifelong Learning Center incorporates classrooms and counseling rooms for children facing bullying or non-attendance, as well as after-school care functions for children with foreign roots, establishing a multigenerational facility that fosters coexistence. Spaces for both interaction and solitude are provided here. Through these projects, we focus on architecture that responds to pressing social issues while reconfiguring conventional building types, offering new models of public architecture that emphasize inclusivity and diversity.

A place to grow and to gather, the large undulating roof becomes a placeholder for children while thoughtfully responding to the local climate in Casamance region of Senegal. Elements of light, wind, and water are guided, shielded, and embraced through simple architectural gestures. At the heart of this project is a series of large thin-tile Catalan vaults, providing the primary architectural “contour”. Its soft, sweeping ridgeline evokes a landform gently rising from the earth, creating a landscape that envelops the architecture to ensure a safe and inviting environment for growth. This roof is designed not only to shield unrelenting sunlight but also to collect valuable rainwater.
