(The Two L’s):
A place to grow and to gather, the large undulating roof of Casamance Vaults becomes a placeholder for children while thoughtfully responding to the local climate. Elements of light, wind, and water are guided, shielded, and embraced through simple architectural gestures.
At the heart of this project is a series of large thin-tile Catalan vaults, providing the primary architectural “contour”. Its soft, sweeping ridgeline evokes a landform gently rising from the earth, creating a landscape that envelops the architecture to ensure a safe and inviting environment for growth. This roof is designed not only to shield unrelenting sunlight but also to collect valuable rainwater.
The Two L’s:
The large L frames the open grounds, providing spatial organization on the site, and small L’s frame the space for classrooms. The arrangement enables a welcoming entrance that connects the nursery to the surrounding community, simultaneously allowing adjustment for the level of accessibility as necessary. The classroom volumes, sheltered under one expansive vaulted roof, are composed of two L-shaped volumes arranged in reverse orientations, forming a semi-enclosed courtyard that serves as the central play area.
